Allison Jennings, a name synonymous with dedication and passion in the Illinois gymnastics scene, has carved a remarkable path through the sport she loves. Her journey is a testament to perseverance, love for gymnastics, and the unwavering support of her coaches and family. This is the story of Allison’s love affair with gymnastics.
The Beginning of a Lifelong Passion
For Allison, gymnastics wasn’t just a sport; it was a calling. Unlike many athletes who experiment with various activities before finding their niche, Allison knew from a young age that gymnastics was her special place. “I always loved gymnastics, so I never really thought what life would be like doing another sport,” she shared. This unwavering commitment has been the driving force behind her success and longevity in the sport.
Allison’s dedication sees her spending countless hours honing her skills at Mid Illinois Gymnastics in Godfrey. Her training schedule is rigorous, reflecting her commitment to excellence. “I’m here Monday through Friday from 3:45 to 7,” Jennings said. “On Saturday, I’m usually here from 9 to 11.” This demanding routine showcases her discipline and the sacrifices she makes to pursue her passion.
Overcoming Obstacles: The Comeback Kid
Like any athlete, Allison has faced her share of challenges. One particularly difficult moment came at the state meet last year when a broken ankle cut her competition short. “It was on the vault, I had just landed a little short,” she recalled. “We went to the trainer, and we decided we had to pull out.” This setback could have deterred many, but for Allison, it only fueled her determination to come back stronger.
Her recent victory at the Illinois Level 9 State Gymnastics Meet in Waukegan, where she clinched the state championship in floor exercise, is a powerful testament to her resilience. This win was especially sweet, serving as redemption for the previous year’s injury. It underscores her mental fortitude and ability to overcome adversity.
A Champion’s Support System
Allison’s success isn’t solely her own. She credits much of her growth to the unwavering support of her coaches at Mid Illinois Gymnastics, Kristin Bower and Brendan Lawson. Bower describes Allison as an athlete with “determination and her never-quit attitude,” adding, “She is always there when we open and doesn’t leave until we close. Additionally, she likes to create a solid game plan each day with (coach) Brendan Lawson, who consistently pushes her to improve.”
Lawson’s coaching, combined with Allison’s work ethic, has proven to be a winning formula. He consistently challenges her to improve, ensuring she never rests on her laurels.
More Than Just Medals: A Role Model
Allison’s impact extends beyond her athletic achievements. She is a role model for younger gymnasts at Mid Illinois, embodying the values of hard work, dedication, and sportsmanship. Bower notes, “She always wants the best for those around her. Even when things don’t go her way, she remains positive, picks herself up, and keeps moving forward.” Her willingness to help and mentor younger athletes demonstrates her character and commitment to the sport. “She always puts everyone else first before herself. She loves to help coach all of the kids at the gym.”
The Road Ahead: Regionals and Beyond
Fresh off her state championship win, Allison is now focused on the Level 9 Region 5 Championships in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. Her recent performance at the state meet, where she also earned fifth place on vault, ninth place on balance beam, and fifth place in the all-around competition, has secured her a spot at the regional competition.
Looking back to 2024, at the Region 5 Championships in Dayton, Ohio, Jennings achieved impressive results, including a fourth-place finish on vault (9.300), fourth in floor exercise (9.375), and seventh on the balance beam (8.400). These results highlight her consistent performance across multiple events and her ability to perform under pressure.
The Unique Challenges of a Downstate Gymnast
Allison’s journey is unique because Edwardsville High School, like many downstate Illinois schools, doesn’t offer gymnastics as a competitive sport. This means she doesn’t have the same high school sports experience as her brother. However, she has thrived in the club environment at Mid Illinois, showcasing that passion and dedication can overcome structural limitations.
A Love That Endures
Allison’s love affair with gymnastics has spanned over 11 years, weathering challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic and injuries. Through it all, her passion has remained constant. “I knew I wanted to be a gymnast,” she affirms, and that conviction has guided her through every obstacle. Her story is a reminder that pursuing one’s passion with unwavering dedication can lead to extraordinary achievements.
As Allison continues her journey, she carries with her the support of her coaches, the admiration of her teammates, and the unwavering love for the sport that has shaped her into the champion she is today. Her story is an inspiration to gymnasts and athletes everywhere, demonstrating the power of perseverance, dedication, and a true love for the game.
