A State College area fitness center has made a significant contribution to the local community by raising over $40,000 for two vital non-profit organizations. One on One Fitness, located at 424 W. Aaron Dr., successfully collected $40,109 through its 2024 “Give Back” initiative. The funds will be split between the Centre Volunteers in Medicine (CVIM) and the Centre County Youth Service Bureau (YSB), both of which provide essential services to the region.
A Decade of Giving Back
This year’s achievement marks another successful chapter in One on One Fitness’s long-standing commitment to community support. Since the “Give Back” program began in 2009, it has now generated a remarkable $612,089 for local charities. This ongoing dedication demonstrates the powerful impact that local businesses can have on their communities. The program’s unique approach involves not only direct donations from the business but also provides clients an opportunity to contribute by paying for specific services with a donation to one of the two designated charities.
Supporting Healthcare for the Uninsured
Centre Volunteers in Medicine (CVIM) is a free clinic dedicated to providing quality healthcare to low-income, uninsured individuals who live or work in Centre County. CVIM offers a range of services including medical, dental, prescription assistance, case management, and behavioral health, adopting a holistic approach to patient care. Paula Williams, CVIM’s executive director, expressed her gratitude for One on One’s generosity, stating, “This unique initiative allows us to continue providing free quality healthcare to the uninsured in Centre County.” She also encouraged other businesses to emulate this commitment to strengthening the community. CVIM’s mission is to improve lives through good health, recognizing that individuals are more than their disease. The organization aims to help patients remain active, productive members of the community.
CVIM relies heavily on the support of the community to provide these services. They also have various fundraising campaigns throughout the year, including the “Run for CVIM Challenge” and “Walk the Walk for Breast Health” as well as special events like the “Centre County Cornhole Classic” and “Battle of the Minds” trivia night. The organization also seeks volunteers including doctors, nurses, dentists and non-clinical roles such as receptionists and administrative assistants. In 2023, CVIM received a multi-million dollar boost in their fundraising efforts, further expanding their capacity to serve the community.
Providing a Safety Net for Youth
The Centre County Youth Service Bureau (YSB) also expressed its sincere appreciation for the support from One on One Fitness. Christine Bishop, CEO of YSB, stated that the financial support has been invaluable, allowing the organization to provide shelter services to young people in crisis and focus on preventative programs for children and families. YSB is dedicated to ensuring that children, youth, and families have the opportunity to reach their full potential. YSB provides community-based, family-based and residential services.
The Youth Service Bureau offers a wide array of services. These include, but aren’t limited to, parent education, mentoring, drug and alcohol abuse prevention, after school drop-in centers, family counseling, and even a runaway shelter. The organization serves nearly 4,000 individuals through their various programs. Their services are crucial in supporting vulnerable young people and families in the community, helping them navigate difficult circumstances and build brighter futures. YSB relies on private donations and fundraising events to support 17% of its overall budget.
How the “Give Back” Initiative Works
The “Give Back” initiative is a multifaceted fundraising effort. It combines direct financial contributions from One on One Fitness with donations made by their clients when they pay for certain services. This approach allows for a broad base of community participation, demonstrating a collective commitment to supporting local charities.
Community Impact
The success of the “Give Back” program highlights the importance of local businesses actively engaging in charitable work. Bruce Burke, founder of One on One, mentioned that the program was initially intended to “leverage our charitable giving; to spend one dollar to raise two”. However, it has evolved into something more meaningful, becoming a demonstration of community spirit.
The funds raised through this initiative will help CVIM and YSB continue to deliver vital services to those in need within Centre County. These organizations serve as essential resources for the community, ensuring access to healthcare and support services for vulnerable populations. The funds raised through the “Give Back” initiative allow them to maintain and expand their services. The partnership between One on One Fitness and these two non-profits serves as a reminder of the incredible good that can be achieved when local businesses and the community work together.
